Last summer, I hired the FABULOUS stylist, Rose Jubb, to help me dress myself in the summers.
The rest of the year, I know what to do with myself (well, so I thought!), but it gets HOTTT in Vegas and my comfort zone of layers isn’t the most doable thing in 115 degree heat.
And let me tell you, I got WAYYYY more than I paid for!
Here’s one of my fave things about the work she does: while she has a somewhat uniform set of guidelines for dressing yourself, she doesn’t AT ALL make cookie cutters. She does a bunch of work to get clear about who you are so that she can help you show up as the complete representation of YOU all the time.
Hmm… sound familiar?
I do that same thing with my singers & speakers. Why? Because if you show up looking one way and saying something incongruent to how you look, people are going to have red flags and questions and will likely miss the point of anything you have to say because they’ll be trying to figure out who you are.
The same is true in your performing. If you show up looking like a total badass and then you pull out something like Taylor Swift’s “Love Story”, your audience of decision-makers is going to spend more time trying to understand your song choice than they are on whether or not you’re singing it well.
You want how you show up in the room to be a walking billboard of who you are and what they can expect. And when your audience of decision-makers finds out what song you’re about to sing, their first thought should be, “of course it is!”, or “obviously!”. And the way you sing it should continue to match up with how you show up and the choice of song you make.
If that’s not what you’re doing, you’re sending mixed signals and your audience is confused. In sales, we say “a confused mind doesn’t buy”. You may not be selling something for literal money, but you are selling the idea of them picking you or voting for you or scoring you, and if you’re confusing them, you’re most likely going to end up in the “no pile”.
So let’s fix this! I love doing this kind of work with singers (and if you need some wardrobe help to polish it up, I’ve got a hell of a hookup for you!).
